If you love long walks and beautiful green space, you’ll be interested to learn that our latest age-exclusive community at Button House in Hackbridge is nearby one of the best green spaces in London.
Beddington Park, which has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag award, is a true London treasure. Steeped in history, it’s said that the space is one of the most rich, historical, and archaeological sites in London with evidence of settlements dating back to the late Bronze Age.
Archaeological digs in recent years have unearthed some fascinating finds, including the discovery of the ‘Portioners House’ within Beddington Park, which was built in the 1200s. This property was allocated to the ‘Portioner’ – a member of The Church who was entitled to a portion of proceeds from the land within Beddington Parish.
Woodlands & meadows
Today though, it’s a much-loved and cherished parkland for South West London, with woodlands, meadows, an abundance of trees, and some historical structures which are a nod back to the days gone by – places such as St Mary's Church, The Great Hall within Carew Manor, The Dovecote, and the Canon Bridges' Terracotta Bridge.
Stroll through the grounds, stop and enjoy the world, with treats from The Pavilion Café, which is open seven days a week, from 8.30am to 4.30pm offering fresh sandwiches, cooked breakfasts, cakes, hot and cold drinks, and ice creams.
Indulge in the new additions at Beddington Park, which come following a Heritage Lottery Funding project that has seen much of the space refreshed and updated. There’s a new playground, and the lake and stock pond has been restored to become exclusively a natural wildlife pool.
It’s a great place for staying active too, with six tennis courts, a ball court and outdoor gym all on offer!
Make a difference to the local environment
Members of our Button House community can also donate their time to the park’s many volunteering opportunities too. The Tree Wardens’ Group meets regularly with planting and maintenance sessions, learning events and the opportunity to get involved in creating trails and carrying out surveys. And there’s the Grange Gardening Club which meets every second Tuesday in the month to help keep the Grange garden looking beautiful.
Volunteers don't need any prior experience and can get involved in planting, pruning, weeding and general tidying – perfect for anyone who loves nothing better than putting their green fingers to good work!
